Is Gambling Addiction A Genetic Problem?

A hot research topic has recently been the relationship of gambling addiction and genetics. Many research teams all over the world have conducted studies about the topic, and it seems as though the development of gambling addiction can be attributed to an individual’s parents.

Previously, studies only covered the effect of genetics on men’s likelihood of developing gambling additions. However, research teams set out to tackle the issue of female genetics this year. It was discovered that although men are more likely to develop gambling addictions, both males and females are equally as influenced by genetics.

The results of these studies suggest that banning online gambling in particular countries would be prove to be in effective. Apparently, it is not the availability of online casinos that causes individuals to become addicted to the activity. Instead, it has more to do with their genetics. Rather than banning the activity, it becomes more and more prevalent that government should put more money into problem gambling awareness campaigns and treatment options.

The study also rules out the possibility of a particular gambling gene. It has been a controversial issue for quite some time. However, researchers have concluded that, despite the genetic influence on the development of gambling problems, the presence of one particular gene that causes the condition does not exist.
