YouTube Restricts Online Gambling Ads To 18+ Audience
Although many social networking websites have recently decided to ban advertisements for such ‘adult’ industries as online gambling, they are beginning to see the profitability by getting involved in these markets. Google was one of the first places to prohibit online gambling advertisements, but it has finally changed its mind.
Now, Google and YouTube will sell advertising to online gambling operators, which will only be viewable by users who are older than 18 years old. Google will ensure that each target is older than 18 years of age by using YouTube’s age verification system, which requires users to sign in to verify their age before viewing videos with adult content. Google has assured online advertising regulators that the only people to view ‘adult content’ ads will be of legal age.
This was the obvious next step after Google loosened its advertising restrictions in 2008, when the company stated that online gambling operators could advertise on Google UK if they were registered with the Gambling Commission.
With online gambling becoming less of a taboo topic in the online gaming world, it is only natural that it will gain a greater web presence. With that presence will come greater opportunities for advertising and social networking, but it will take some time. This is the first step, and it is likely that we will see more online gambling advertisements in the future.
