Online Casinos Face Threats from Shadow Network

Researchers have recently discovered a hacker group that they are calling the Shadow Network. Using remote computers, Shadow Network has been accessing files belonging to government agencies from around the world. Although group has been involved in online espionage most recently, they are also known to target online casinos and other internet-based businesses to make quick money.

After a year-long investigation, researchers recovered many files from databases belonging to Shadow Network. In this collection were top-secret government files, including visa applications and confidential emails to politicians. This type of information is very valuable and can be sold for millions to other governments or international criminals.

When it comes to online gambling, Shadow Network first blocks access to an online casino, restricting all of its players visiting its site. Once the operator discovers what the hackers have done, they hold the website ransom and demand large amounts of money in return for lifting the block. These types of scams pay far less than online espionage but they provide quick paydays for hackers.

Fortunately, money belonging to the players remains safe. Online casinos employ very sophisticated encryption software that restricts any outside sources from access the personal data of their customers. So, instead of targeting players, hacker groups like the Shadow Network make the casino itself a victim. Although players are not the ones at risk, these attacks are detrimental to the online gambling industry – and operators must begin defending themselves even more.
