Slot Machines Getting a Bad Reputation
A new study is blaming the majority of gambling addiction on slot machines. In fact, researchers claim that slot machine players will develop a gambling problem up to four times quicker than other casino games.
This is terrible news for slot machine players and operators. The claim is that the fun of pulling the lever (or clicking it for online versions) causes some people to lose track of their money. Also, most people want to bet the max for each spin which would, in turn, maximize their winnings. If a player hits the jackpot without betting the max, they will only get a fraction of the total jackpot.
For the purposes of this study, researchers used a virtual slot game to test players’ reactions to near misses, or when the symbols almost line up but don’t quite. They found that players tended to keep playing because they felt as though they were “almost” winning.
It would also appear as though players often develop a gambling addiction if they’ve been depressed. This is because people look at gambling as a reprieve from their daily lives. If someone is regularly feeling depressed then gambling might offer some much-needed excitement and short-term happiness.
Does this mean that slots players should expect to become addicted? Of course not. There are many outside influences that factor into addiction. The way to ensure it doesn’t happen to you is to set limits for yourself and never let your gambling get out of control.
